Dear parent,
There is a silver lining to these testing corona lock down days. That is the complete dedication of your time to your child/children and an opportunity to teach them about every-day objects and activities. Practical learning is what we believe in and there is no better life-skills teacher for a child than his/her own parents or grand-parents.
Are you worried about what activities to do with your child? Is your child bored of regular worksheets and device-based learning? Here are some suggestions from us.
1. Do some gardening: Gardening gives children a chance to learn an important life skill, growing their own food. Working in a garden, a child can experience the satisfaction that comes from caring for something over time, while observing the cycle of life firsthand.. Gardening is also a great way to teach environmental awareness by exploring the workings of nature. Take some inspiration from this video: https://youtu.be/ecty4bj6d6o
- Recycle and grow: teach your child that you can grow a plant in use and throw containers, plastic bottles, egg shells/trays, mushroom trays and more.
- Plant some daily veggies and fruits, show your kids how to take the seeds out and how the germination time varies from plant to plant
2. Teach your kids about kitchen ingredients:
This is an essential life skill for your kids. Teach the difference between a clove and a cardamom, bengal gram and green gram and more. Teach them why we use spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, garlic, ginger, etc in Indian cuisine.
- Activity: Take your kids into the kitchen, show them all the ingredients, tell them their names, now jumble up the ingredients and ask them to pick out a few.
3. No fire cooking: Wouldn't it be great if your child can fix his/her peanut butter sandwich or make a fruit salad? Teach your kids some no fire cooking and ask them to prepare some yummy evening snacks for every one. Here are some recipes for you to try: https://youtu.be/lF3x3x1xSmY
4. Newspaper reading: Ask your child to read out an English newspaper out loud. Make it a point to ensure your child reads something out loud daily. Be it a newspaper or a story book. Your child will build up the confidence on language and will not fear speaking up in front of a crowd due to this activity
5. Teach origami: Get your child to embrace their creative side. Teach them some fun origami craft with the help of this link: https://www.easypeasyandfun.com/easy-origami-for-kids/
6. Teach them yoga and meditation: It is important to stay fit though we are staying indoors. Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Here is a video about how to do a suryanamaskar: https://youtu.be/_eCHrcq5wRY
7. Teach them to fold and clean: Do you know your child is ready to do anything to get rid of this boredom? Make use of this golden time and teach your kids to fold their clothes, clean their closet. Before you know it, they will be all too willing to clean up after themselves
8. Teach them prayer: It is very important for the children to know their daily prayers. Teach them the following and anything extra that you may deem fit. Your child already knows the lunch time prayer as it is mandatory in the school. Ask them to do it consistently.
Patriotic Songs: Vandemataram, Jana gana mana, Maa telugu Talli ki, Indian pledge
9. Teach them some traditional games: Do you remember all the games we used to play before mobile phones have taken over our lives? Teach your kids ludo, snake and ladder, five stones, hopscotch, gilli danda, kho kho, hide and seek, monopoly, carrom board and chess and more
10. Of course their course work. Make sure your child doesn't forget all he/she learned for the past year. Revise with them, make them strong in their basics while having fun through the day
